On Thursday 17th March, youngsters at The Henry Cort Community College hosted an innovative music competition in search of a talented young musical superstar. There were 14 acts in the contest but the expert panel crowned Charlie-May Dekker the overall Musical Superstar with her sensational singing performance of ‘Perfect’ by Hedley.  Not only does Charlie-May get to keep the trophy for a year, she has also landed herself and incredible six hour session in a recording studio to create her first CD at The Genesis Centre, Fareham. Incredibly however, Maria Calway-Kennedy, Youth Team Manager, Gosport District Youth Team declared that the standards were so exceptionally high that she decided to give out three prize sessions in the recording studios rather than just the one. This generous offer means that Chloe Howes and Honour Burcham accompanied by Connie Hayden also benefit from precious moments in the recording studio.

The judges included Jane Baskerville who represented the governors, Margaret Faulkner, Business Advisor to the highly successful Gavfro Enterprises and Maria Calway-Kennedy, Youth Team Manager, Gosport District Youth Team. Teacher, Mr Rhodes hosted the show for the first time and warmed up the audience with his infectious sense of humour.

Sam Cross, a former student at The Henry Cort Community looked after the sound and lighting. Teacher, Mr Paul Bristow gave a helping hand behind the scenes. The event took place in the newly furbished Cort Theatre, which has recently been transformed thanks to a generous donation from The Prices Trust.

Mr Phil Munday, Principal at The Henry Cort Community College remarked “Musical Superstars is always a vibrant event and this year was no exception. We continue to maintain, improve and promote the practice and performance of music. We have some exceptionally talented musicians and it’s a pleasure to hear them perform.”

The school choir opened the event, setting a great atmosphere for the rest of the contestants to work in. Competitors ranged from male and female soloists to duets and ‘Pyjamaramas’, the school band. There were various crowd favourites, some acts who had tried to win for the last three years and some for whom this really was a nerve wrecking first experience.

Over 120 tickets were sold by Gavfro Enterprises, the event organisers and students from The Henry Cort Community College.  Young entrepreneurs from Gavfro Enterprises are fast becoming a media sensation in the South with radio and TV interviews following their success last month as the first school in the UK to win the prestigious ‘Enterprise without Borders' competition organised by Young Enterprise and supported in the UK by Accenture. The team won an all expenses paid trip to Young Enterprise European Trade Fair in Bratislava from 28th - 30th March 2011.  This unique opportunity to represent the UK will enable the team to further develop their entrepreneurial skills and further promote their business in an international playing field.

Mr Phil Munday, Principal at The Henry Cort Community College said, “We are extremely proud of Gavfro’s latest phenomenal achievement. We encourage an enterprise spirit by enabling our students to be aware of the challenges facing individuals and society and to be able to develop creative solutions. Motivated and inspirational, the Gavfro Enterprises team and indeed all those involved in Musical Superstars continue to impress us with their talent, commitment and boundless energy.”
