On 30th November, nine crew members from Royal Navy submarine HMS Triumph visited students at The Henry Cort Community College. HMS Triumph (S93) is a Trafalgar-class fleet submarine launched in 1990 and currently in service. The crew, led by Lieutenant Nick Stone are on a tour of all of their affiliated organisations in the UK and The Henry Cort Community College was their first stop.
Young people at The Henry Cort Community College are divided into a number of houses, which are named after notable Royal Navy vessels including Triumph, Daring, Invincible and Victorious. Rob Shepherd, Triumph house leader organised the day.
For members of the Triumph House, the day started with a unique assembly with members of the crew followed by an impressive crew demonstration and related exercise on the design of a submarine. Prizes which included unique Royal Naval badges were awarded by the crew members to the best design teams. During the afternoon, the crew were interviewed by students from Triumph House for the college newspaper.
Senior students in Years 10 and 11 were invited to join the crew for lunch. Many of the youngsters have aspirations for a career in the armed services and this proved to be a great opportunity for them to meet acting servicemen and understand more about their duties.
It is the first time that the Royal Navy has sent such a large group on a tour of this kind visiting all of their affiliated organisations. When the submariners left, they were straight on the road to Malvern to visit another school that has a Triumph House. Later in the week, they will be visiting Triumph Motor Cycles Headquarters before going to Blackpool, their adopted city where they will be guests at the Blackpool v Manchester United premier league match.
Mr Phil Munday, Principal at The Henry Cort Community College said, “We have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming the Royal Navy to our community. It provides an excellent opportunity for us to further support our young people to reach their full potential and encourage them to respect the selfless sacrifice, courage and exemplary service of our British troops.”
Mr Munday is keen to explore plans for future liaison with the Royal Navy and to ensure that young people at The Henry Cort Community College understand and respect the magnificent men and women serving in our Armed Forces on the frontline.
All the houses at The Henry Cort Community College are colour coded. Triumph is in fact yellow so the lyrics “We all live in a yellow submarine” seem particularly apt!
