In the last few weeks, I have been busy in both Fareham and Westminster. Let me give you an example. Last Friday, I visited two schools, Park Gate Primary and St Anthony's, had lunch with local businessmen, followed by a meeting about a project for people with learning disabilities and then I sat down with my campaign team to work on our strategy for the general election. After that Fiona and I had our first night in together all week!
In Westminster, I spent a lot of time on my work for the Conservative Treasury team: talking to business organisations, speaking at conferences and seminars and holding the Government to account. Of course, this is in addition to my work in Westminster for you. This month, this has included a meeting with Natural England to discuss issues about Fareham Creek and clam dredging in Portsmouth Harbour and in the Solent off Brownwich
and Chilling.
Earlier in the month, I also met pupils from Oak Meadow who came on a visit to the House of Commons and then grilled me about my work as an MP. They have since all written to me telling me what a great time they had. The photograph is of me with them.
Fairtrade in Fareham
I often spend Saturday mornings on doorsteps across the constituency campaigning but on 20th February I went to support Fareham's Fairtrade group who had a stand in the shopping centre as part of Fairtrade Fortnight. This aims to raise the profile of Fairtrade across the country and I am really impressed at the way Fairtrade has taken off in recent years. It is amazing how it has become part of the way people do their shopping with more and more shops now offering a wide range of Fairtrade goods. It gives us an opportunity to make a practical contribution to helping developing countries.
Fareham is a Fairtrade Borough and Rachel Hicks and her team from Fareham's Fairtrade group were supported by the Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Ruth Godrich, her Consort, Cllr Mike Godrich, the Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Sean Woodward and me.
