Locks Heath’s Charity CommuniCare, the lifeline transport service for the elderly or disabled, has been awarded £5,000 by Hampshire County Council to go towards a new minibus.

Chair of the CommuniCare Association Philip Lockwood said today:

“We are absolutely delighted to receive this. It is part of a fund to purchase a new minibus, and thanks to the other generous donations we have received we have now been able placed the order. We’re likely to receive the new minibus by early May.”

Established in 1964 the CommuniCare Association is a registered local charity covering Locks Heath, Park Gate, Sarisbury Green, Lower Swanwick, Titchfield Common and Warsash. It runs a lifeline door-to-door transport service for needy locals who want affordable reliable car or minibus transport to and from appointments.

The Association also runs Lunch Clubs twice a week, the Coffee Shop at the Lockswood Centre and organises shopping trips to the Lockswood Centre, Fareham Mall, and Whiteley, as well as assisting other organisations with minibus transport.

Councillor Mel Kendal, Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Environment who agreed the Grants said: "We are aware that community transport schemes are a lifeline for many people. These vehicles are able to offer disabled, as well as older and younger people, the opportunity to reach a wide range of services within their local community. We recognise that it is vital to provide the schemes with some financial support towards the costs of the vehicles."

Other recent donations to CommuniCare have included £1,000 each from the personal funds of Hampshire County Councillors Seán Woodward, Keith Evans and Geoff Hockley, £2,000 from Fareham Borough Council and £350 from the Rotary Club of Locks Heath.

The CommuniCare Association is run completely by volunteers, and they are looking for more help:

“It is great fun with lots of interaction with our Senior Citizens who greatly appreciate the service provided. You are needed – no matter how little time you have to spare and no matter how confident you are tackling new challenges. If you have the time and the will to help others, telephone us on 01489 559697 about the opportunity of continuing to provide an excellent service in your community.”
