Locks Heath’s Warsash Local History Society began in November 1998 to foster interest in the history of Warsash and its close neighbour, Hook.
Now with more than 100 members, including some overseas, the Society is helping to build a permanent local history archive to be maintained for future generations.
They are currently in the process of cataloguing and archiving all their material including written documents, photographs, maps and artefacts, but they encourage and support all new research projects.
Each year the society publishes a 20-24 page newsletter containing historical research carried out by members together with other stories and recollections. These are available free to members, but can also be found in the Locks Heath Centre Library, Fareham Library and the Westbury Museum in Fareham - or purchased from the society.
If you would like to research an aspect of local history then the Society are very happy to help you with sources of information including archive material, photographs, and local contacts. Or if you already have research that you would like to share then they would love to hear from you.
Meetings are held in the Bartholomew Room of the Victory Hall, Warsash starting at 7.30 pm on the first Wednesday of the months of February, April, June, October and December. They are open to all and provide a relaxed, social environment for people interested in local history. New members are always welcome. The membership fee is currently £10 per single person or £18 for a couple.
The Society’s next meeting will be held on 2nd December when the speaker will be John Hardacre, talking about ‘Treasures of Winchester Cathedral’ - followed by wine and mince pies!
