In view of recent complaints from residents in Swanwick Lane
-
Sergeant Dave Spacey, Park Gate Safer Neighbourhoods Team
please carefully note the following.
On 2nd July a 79 year old male who lives in
Southampton was contacted via a telephone cold call by a firm called ‘SAS Fire
and Security’ attempting to sell him a home alarm system. He agreed to a
visit by a sales person. The sales person attended on 5th July.
He was given crime 'advice' and signed up to a ten year monitored
alarm system which was to have cost him over £5500. He gave the sales person a
cheque for £550 and the alarm was to have been installed the next day.
Fortunately his son became aware of this and cancelled the order and the
deposit cheque.
This company is well known for the wrong reasons - it
regularly contacts householders regardless of whether they have signed up
to the Telephone Preference Service. The company is currently appealing court
action with regard to these breaches.
The company is known to Trading standards up and down the
country. Hampshire and Southampton Trading standards are also aware of the
company and that they have started operating in the Southampton area.
Trading standards are keen to obtain registrations from the
company’s vehicles (believed Ford Connect style vans) that are sign written
with the company details. They have advised that their rapid response
teams be contacted should we become aware of this company contacting a
potential customer.
Please follow this link for the Trading Standards Website.
Till next week.
