Western Wards residents have

taken the initiative and are introducing a Speed Awareness Campaign for Warsash.

Based on evidence that 40% of vehicles were speeding at one checkpoint, residents began the Campaign on Monday. They are working together with Park

Gate Police, who have supplied road signs, and with the aid of a grant from Warsash Councillor Keith Evans,

Chair of Warsash Residents

Association (WRA) Bob Duck-Manton said:

The idea is that motorists

get the message that Warsash is a total 30 zone. We plan to leave the signs up

initially for 4 weeks, then take them down and re-deploy them at a later date,

running a further campaign along the same lines when we will log the figures

and hopefully see an improvement”.

Residents

at the WRA meetings have concluded that the worst affected roads for speeding

in Warsash are Warsash Road, Lockswood Road, Fleet End Road, Dibles Road,

Church Road, Osbourne Road, Newtown Road and the Boat estate.

Do

you agree?

“HCC

has informed us previously that there is a chance of the signs being taken down

if left too long in one location so we are looking at moving the campaign

around the area on a regular basis,” says Bob.

“Our

request to Hampshire Constabulary is to work with the WRA by also providing speed monitoring in association with the distribution of our signs. The results

of the speed monitor could then be used to establish black spots and a follow

up of a speed-trap radar could then be implemented.

“We

feel that this type of process of deployment of speed awareness signs followed up by speed monitoring signs then a speed trap radar will have a positive

impact on speed awareness and a dramatic improvement in vehicle speeds through

Warsash.”

Sergeant Dave Spacey of Park

Gate Safer Neighbourhoods Team is in full support of the Campaign:

“To my knowledge this will

be the first time local residents have taken the initiative and got together to

put in place an operation directly aimed at tackling a matter that is important

to them as a community. I would like to thank Bob Duck-Manton and Warsash

Residents Association for this opportunity. I look forward to working alongside

all residents and sincerely hope that together we can make a difference.”

************************************************************************************

This is one of the current major activities at Warsash Residents' Association. If you'd like to hear more go along to their next meeting on 20th October. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month in the Victory Hall at 7.30pm and you will be made most welcome.

Not part of the WRA

Campaign, but we now have a mobile ‘Speed Limit Reminder’ to use here in

Western Wards, which has been bought through Community Action Team (CAT) and council funding.

Attendees of this Summer’s CAT meetings were asked where they

thought it should go. This is the list:

Barnes

Lane (outside the infants school)

Rowan

Way

Coach

Hill

Catisfield

St

Margarets Lane

Hunts Pond Road

Abshot

Road

Prelate

Road

Posbrook

Lane

South

Street

The sign is now being used

on a fortnightly rotational basis. Have you spotted it yet? Is it having an affect

do you think? Let us know!

interesting to find out that our taxes that are meant to go into the community are instead being spent on speed awareness signs- everyone knows that warsash is a 30mph area.

if people are going to speed then nothing but an enforced speed camera will stop them- dont waste our cash in hard times like these on equiping the residence association with speed detectors. SS Patrols coming to a town near you, sieg heil?

a gatso camera costs between £20,000 and £40,000 to install, not including maintenance costs, bob and his comrades have suggested 7-10 different roads that may require it as well.

even if it cost the minimum of £20,000, and was only selected for one site, this £20,000 could instead be spent on the poor roads in the locks heath/warsash area- I'd certainly rather save a few quid on damage caused by all the ****** potholes rather than feel safe that for the 5metres of white markings, people will obey the 30mph limit.

why cant they do the same along Locks rd and
Lower church rd. As im sitting here typing this I have witnessed two cars driving in excess of 50mph I should imagine. Someone is going to get killed before anything is done
