Now in its 140th year the ever-popular Bursledon
-
REAL pirates (apparently) at the Bursledon Regatta 2009
Regatta takes place this weekend – 28th / 29th August in The Elephant Boatyard in
Old Bursledon, this year with the theme ‘A Passage To India’.
Canoe races, rowing and
swimming races, fancy dress competition, tea tent, bar, barbecue, whisky and champagne
raffle, tombola and family floats competition are just a few of the delights
that await on Saturday! In the evening there is a children's torchlight
procession in Bursledon Pool followed by the now famous Regatta firework
display.
Bursledon Regatta originates from the friendly organised
boat races between the Hamble River users of the last century - fishermen, yachtsman
and watermen. It is one of the few traditional village Regattas remaining.
The Regatta is organised and run by
a committee of local people representing the three villages – Swanwick,
Bursledon and Warsash, and relies on funds from the generous support given by
well-wishers to finance it.
Yacht races take place on the
morning of Sunday 29th, with a prize giving in the late afternoon.
I went to this with my
children last year and thoroughly enjoyed it – well worth a visit! Have a look
at the photos I took last year in the Gallery.
