Women drivers in the Western

Wards - what do you think about them?!

Well, in my completely

unbiased opinion not only are we much cleverer and prettier than men, but we’re

also safer drivers. This is proven, I feel, by the fact that car insurance companies give us cheaper

car insurance.

According

to the Swiftcover website, Government figures show

that more than 92% of all convictions for driving offences in the UK are for MEN. They

also show that it is MEN who are responsible for 98% of all convictions for dangerous

driving. OK, it may well be that men do drive more than women, and that there are more male drivers than female drivers. However, statistically speaking at least, as far as insurance companies are concerned, women are safer and more

law abiding drivers.

What do you think?

Well, all of us Locks Heath

Ladies will have the opportunity to prove our driving prowess in October, as all

Western Wards women drivers and can now sign-up for the Hampshire Fire and

Rescue Service’s annual Ladies Driving Challenge 2010 in aid of The Fire

Fighters Charity.

Held on Sunday 10th October

at the Farnborough Air Show site, this year’s event boasts no less than six

operational fire and rescue vehicles for contestants to drive. It’s an opportunity

for women of all ages to show the men that – yes - we can do it too. HGVs,

JCBs, buses, cranes, fork lift trucks, Hiab grabs, tractors, snow ploughs,

recovery vehicles, and even a hovercraft will all be available to drive.

Contestants are expected to

flock from all over Hampshire and neighbouring counties to test their driving

skills whilst being carefully nurtured by firefighters from Hampshire Fire and

Rescue Service.

Firefighter Mark Brittain of

Grayshott Fire Station, one of the event organisers, said:

“This year’s Ladies Driving

Challenge promises to be great day out, offering the most fun you can have with

a seatbelt on!” [No comment] “Women will have the opportunity to drive

some truly amazing vehicles which they would not normally get the chance to do

and raise funds for worthwhile causes at the same time.  The event is so

much fun that participants often come back the following year to experience

different types of vehicle.”

Following the tragic deaths of Hampshire firefighters, James Shears and

Alan Bannon, whilst serving on duty in April this year, half of the proceeds of

the 2010 Hampshire Ladies Driving Challenge will go to the James Shears and

Alan Bannon Memorial Fund.

To take part you must be

over 17 years old and hold a full UK driving licence. Contestants need to

register and pay a £10 fee before raising a minimum of £90.00 in sponsorship

prior to the event. You can find out more about the Challenge by visiting

The Firefighters Charity Website where you can also register online.

I may just have to register for this one myself...

The exclusive Grayshott Spa (http://tinyurl.com/yg7m592) have donated a first prize of a spa day for two, to Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service’s annual Ladies Driving Challenge at Farnborough. The award will be given to the contestant who raises the most money in sponsorship.

Over 200 female contestants are expected to enter this autumn.

The site will be segregated into a number of zones and the vehicles set up to be operational for their typical working environment; contestants then drive and operate the vehicles under the tuition and guidance of experienced operators.

“As always the contestants will be looked after by firefighters from Hampshire Fire and Rescue” explains one of the event organisers Mark Brittain “it’s extremely rewarding to see how competent the contestant are and how professionally the vehicles are driven.”

The prize includes access to all the spa facilities, a three course lunch and £200 worth of treatments. The facilities were voted Best British Spa by Tatler Magazine in 2007.
