Southampton Police are trying to reunite

precious World War I documents and jewellery found in a bin area located off

Winchester Road in Southampton with their owner.

A telegram addressed to a Miss Berry of Little

Hatherden in Andover, was found in January this year along with a newspaper

cutting mentioning Private Frank Berry returning to Carlow having spent seven

months in the trenches.

Also in the bin was a hoard of jewellery (pictured)

and two handbags, one made of straw and very distinctive with butterflies in

different colours running along the side, the other a blue synthetic ladies

handbag.

Police have said enquiries in the Andover

area have been unsuccessful and they do not know if the items were stolen. They

hope they may be recognised by someone living in Hampshire area.

Helen Ward, burglary investigation coordinator,

based at Hulse Road, said:

"There are obviously some really

sentimental pieces here. We have no idea where or how these items came to be in

a bin in Southampton or if they were stolen from a burglary in the city or elsewhere

in the county.”

If anyone has any information contact Helen

Ward, Burglary Investigation Co-ordinator direct at Hulse Road on 02380 599997

or email helen.ward@hampshire.pnn.police.uk
