Fareham’s ‘Walking to Health’ initiative will be celebrating
-
Holly Hill Woodland Park, Sarisbury Green
its sixth year with a special anniversary walk on 28th July in Locks
Heath’s beautiful Holly Hill Woodland Park. The free walk organised by Walking
to Health volunteers and the Council's Community Development Officer will begin at 11am and will last for about an hour. There’ll be refreshments on
offer from 'The Friends of Holly Hill', but take a picnic too.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Fareham, Councillor Brian and
Councillor Susan Bayford will be joining the walk and helping to celebrate six years of this successful healthy initiative.
Executive Member for Community, Councillor Connie Hockley
said: "Since we started the Walking to Health initiative in 2004,
approximately 7,000 people have walked approximately 30,000 miles, led by ten qualified and extremely dedicated volunteer walk leaders. Congratulations to
all those involved in this fantastic scheme and here's to the next six
years!"
Unbeknown to most of us, 'Friends of Holly Hill', the
voluntary group who jointly maintain Holly Hill Woods with Fareham Borough
Council, have for this past year been struggling to find a replacement for
their outgoing Chairman David Redwood and Secretary. The
group would, in fact, have dissolved had founder members Councillor David
Swanbrow and his wife Jane not stepped in to take the role as Chairman and
Secretary respectively themselves, accompanying Dave Munday, the new Treasurer.
Coincidentally it was David and Jane Swanbrow who kicked off the Walking for Health programme as Mayor and Mayoress of Fareham in 2004!
Both David and Jane have very busy lives. They
expressed a hope that others would come forward to take on the roles of
Chairman and Secretary in the future. If you are interested
and feel you could help take a look at the Friend’s Website.

This summer also
sees the launch of ‘Postcards from the Park’ 2010 - a national photography
competition organised by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Big Lottery Fund and
parks charity GreenSpace.
Now in its fourth
year, this competition is continuting to grow with thousands of entries
received each year. Categories include wildlife, heritage and people at play.
It’s worth entering as the
overall winner receives £1,000 of Jessops vouchers, and finalists will be in
with a chance of winning an overnight stay in London and seeing their photo
exhibited at a London Gallery.
The closing date
is Sunday 1 August 2010. To enter look here.
Remember you can
always show off your good pictures by uploading them into a gallery on
