doesn’t like good old Fish ‘n’ Chips on a Friday? Well, a NEW fish and chip
shop ‘The Dolphin’ has opened in Locks Heath / Western Wards. I spotted this
whilst running a couple of weeks ago when the irresistible scent of chips and
vinegar wafted into my nostrils as I sprinted (OK jogged) along Barnes Lane. So
I popped in today to talk to the owner, Ali Ozdemil.
Originally from Turkey, 31
year old Ali has lived here
since he was 10 and comes from a family of caterers. All his six siblings - 3
brothers and 3 sisters - are in the business too, in different parts of the
country. Ali himself has years of experience in Fish and Chips. Remember the Big
Blue in West Street, Fareham? That belonged to him - he recently sold it to
open The Dolphin here. Have you ever tried Ali’s Grill Kebab Shop in Highland
Road, Fareham? That’s his too. Or maybe you’ve eaten in Copnor Grill in
Portsmouth? Guess what…
For a very long time Plaice on the Green has
had the monopoly on the Fish and Chip market in Western Wards. So how does The
Dolphin compare?
Well my family and I ate on Sunday (yes,
open on a Sunday) from The Dolphin and we were very pleased! The shop was very
busy but the service was quick, efficient and FRIENDLY. Now, call me
old-fashioned, but I think that makes a difference. Staff were actually
interacting with the customers, not just each other. We had a meal for three
adults and two children for less than £20. Two small chicken kebabs, 2 large chips, one small cod and one haddock plus one jumbo
sausage. I would say Plaice on the Green has the edge on the chips slightly,
but Dolphin’s fish was as fresh and tasty as Plaice’s and Dolphin’s batter was
amazing! Thin, light, crispy in no way oily and absolutely delicious. As I have recently moved I am now
closer to The Dolphin than Plaice, and have to say I am not tempted to travel
that extra distance back to my old regular.
“All our food is the best quality. The fish
is all fresh with no skin and no bones. The nuggets and pies are the best
quality. I have had 15 years experience - noone does it better than me!” say’s
Ali. Of course he would – but I have to say I have no argument with him.
Have you tried The Dolphin yet? What do you
think? Let me know! Leave your thoughts here if you wish, however they'll remain on the website for all to see if you pop them in the Business
Directory.

Yep....I was def a favourite of Plaice on the Green..the biggest portions of chips ever. the last few times however have found the chips so oily you can literally squeeze it out. So tried the dolphine and to be honest although the portions are a lot smaller the quality seems better so will be sticking with it now .
