Mary Shelley published 'Frankenstein' in 1818 and almost immediately it was turned into a stage play and throughout the nineteenth century there were innumerable dramatisations of the story and almost all were melodramas in the best Victorian tradition. But there are many versions of the Frankenstein story; there is the story as originally written by Mary Shelley and there are the stories played out in the melodramas and in the 1931 movie directed by James Whale: the image of Boris Karloff in his movie make-up as the creature has become iconic.
Like a great deal of early cinema the movie borrows heavily for its plot and acting style from the Victorian melodramas. The Titchfield Festival Theatre's production is firmly in the movie/melodrama tradition. All the familiar melodrama ingredients are there, music, grave robbing, the creation of the creature, a hero, a heroine and a villain. But the play gives the plot its own twist on the well known story and asks the question, who is the true villain of the piece?
