Set in a claustrophobic, hilltop cottage in a remote part of Galway in 1989, The Beauty Queen of Leenane is an award winning first play by Martin McDonagh. It’s about entrapment and emigration in the pre-Tiger economy of the far west of Ireland. “The Beauty Queen” herself is a forty year old virgin, Maureen, trapped into taking care of her aging mother, Mag. The play is a black comedy with dire consequences in which the mother and daughter constantly battle and manipulate one another’s lives in a seriously dysfunctional relationship. Maureen is offered a brief respite from the drudgery of caring for Mag and the chance of a relationship with Pato, a local man who is also trapped, working away from home on dangerous building sites in London. His younger brother Ray, trapped in a mundane world of Australian soap operas, is feckless and work shy. He acts as a reluctant messenger for Pato as the doomed relationship with Maureen first develops and is then cruelly snatched from her.
