I've just read this in the Times today:

    tinyurl.com/l5yelb

    A really interesting article.

Just wondering what other parents were thinking about Swine Flu? The logical side of me (contrary to popular opinion I DO have one) says "There's nothing you can do about it, so don't worry - everything will probably be FINE". However, the somewhat less logical, emotional mother in me says "PROTECT THE CHILDREN, stay indoors, wear masks... PANIC".

Then there's the vaccine that's being produced. Not sure that I'm 100% happy with my children receiving that either... How can a safe vaccine be produced so quickly? What about testing it?

Poor you! So did you go to the GP or did they diagnose you on the phone? Did you have a Flu Buddy to get your Tamiflu? It's promising that you're able to post on here. Hope you're completely better very soon...

Diagnosed over phone, as they wouldn't let me anywhere near the surgery. My GP said that in his opinion Tamiflu was a waste of time unless administered within 48 hours of catching it. This only applies to the fit and healthy.

My son works at a bulders merchant nearby and this morning one of the company's drivers remarked "Stay away from me, my wife has the dreaded 'flu"
Trouble is, my son has 14 month old twins at home who were born very prematurely and are at serious risk if the infection gets near them. What should he do??

Even as I typed this came a phone call saying that the driver has been sent home! Relieved, sure, but it's very frightening!

It IS scary. Part of me feels that in this day and age these things don't happen any more - at least not in the 'Western World' where we have 'science' on our side. From what I gather though this flu isn't any more serious than normal seasonal flu. It's easier to catch than normal flu so more people will get it. But once you've got it you are no more likely to die than if you had normal flu. More people will probably die in total just because more people will catch it. I don't know about prem babies though. I'd be worried too. Hope they're OK.
