Fareham Borough Council is asking Fareham residents to take part in a once in a lifetime opportunity, by helping to decide the name for the new community North of Fareham, in a consultation running from Friday 1st February until Sunday 31st March 2013.

The Council has researched local historical records to come up with the three names that people can consider. Each of the three names has a close historical connection with the land to the North of Fareham:

Spurlings: The name 'Spurlings' is marked on the 1879 Ordnance Survey map. In 1841 it was occupied by Charles Osborn (1794-1859). Charles Osborn developed the Victorian villas along Osborn Road. Today, there is a Spurlings Road north of the M27 at Junction 11.

Swansdell: Swans Dell Cottage was occupied in 1841 by the gamekeeper of Roche Court and a labourer John Stares. Swans Dell Cottage is marked on the 1879 Ordnance Survey map.

Welborne: Welborne relates to fields immediately north of Kiln Road and south of Kneller Court. The land was occupied at the time of the tithe map by John Budd. He occupied a lot of land in the area including a house, garden yard and buildings at North Fareham and also the former Pooke Farm. The land was owned as part of Fareham Manor by the Gardiner family of Roche Court.

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Seán Woodward said: "The three names were chosen after a lengthy process of looking at the history of the area and the names and landmarks associated with it. This is another opportunity for local people to get involved and help shape the new community. We are particularly keen that young people should have their say as many of them may well be living there and being part of the new community in the years to come. The identity of the new community is important and the name is obviously a critical part of that."

How can people vote?

There are a number of ways for people to get involved and vote for their favourite name:

• Vote online at www.fareham.gov.uk

• Vote on Fareham's Facebook page /FarehamBC

• Visit the Civic Offices and upcoming CAT Meetings and vote using tokens

• Use the voting slip in Fareham Today

• Use the voting slip in The News

• Local schools have been invited to take part in voting sessions.

• Young people will have the chance to vote at the next SNAP disco.

The voting exercise will be running until Sunday 31st March. Once all of the votes have been counted, the name with the most votes will be announced at the meeting of the Council’s Executive on 15th April. This will be subject to the normal call in period.

More information on the new community can be found at www.fareham.gov.uk. If you have any questions about the 'Naming on the new community North of Fareham' consultation, you can contact the Communications Team on 01329 236100 or email consultation@fareham.gov.uk.
